Artisan Cheese Factory & The Cheese Cafe
The architecturally-designed artisan cheese factory and The Cheese Cafe is an intriguing combination of rustic rural charm and sleek stainless steel. Designed by award-winner Pierre du Toit, the multi-purpose structure is an exciting addition to the food and wine experience on offer in Hawke’s Bay Wine Country.
The Cheese Cafe is open every day, from 10am - 4.30pm, so why not call in and see us next time you're in Havelock North. There's a delicious selection of cheese platters available, plus some simple cheese-inspired treats. Local wine, beer brewed near and far, refreshing juices and Hawthorne coffee roasted just down the road are also available.
While you're there enjoying a platter and perhaps a glass of wine, watch how cheese is made, see the maturation rooms and sample the result of hand-made dedication to cheese creation.
The collection of rustic items retrieved from dairy farms and factories around New Zealand forms the beginnings of a special museum, a quaint reminder of how time-tested methods of making cheese remain very much the same.
Milk vats may have got larger and the styles available may have widened, but cheesemaking today is basically the same as it was centuries ago, when a desert-bound nomad unknowingly created the first curds and whey. Find out more on the History of Cheese.
